Give Me Your Best Shot, New Year!

Happy New Year!

I've been sitting here pondering deep thoughts to share with you for the new year, but I'm afraid today is not a day for deep thoughts from me. Maybe Monday. ;)

I do, however, have a favorite photo for you. This picture was taken on Christmas day, on the beach in Florida. Necco was looking out at the ocean, and I glanced over at her and noticed that the other kids were reflected in her new sunglasses. I had to capture the scene.

What have you been photographing this week? Did you catch any good Christmas photos? Have you tried anything new? Read to find out more about Give Me Your Best Shot....And come back to leave the link to your best shot below (please link to your actual Give Me Your Best Shot post). And grab my button on my sidebar menu or link to me so that we can get more people to stop by!

PS--if anyone can solve the mystery of why the GMYBS button can't be posted within a post without messing up the code, I'd be forever grateful!

Give me your best shot at Better in Bulk

Home Again, Home Again!

We made it back home from Florida safely, and now I am faced with not only the horrible task of unpacking, but also the overwhelming task of packing away all of the Christmas decorations. My house is a mess. In fact, it doesn't look too different than my in-laws' house looked on Christmas morning, which (since you asked) was fabulous. I couldn't have asked for a better vacation, and the kids couldn't have dreamed up a better Christmas.

Now that we're back home and trying to get back into the swing of things, I have some winners to announce! I apologize for being a few days late on the announcement, but it was not easy to get on my computer at the beach. So without further ado, the two winners of my Walmart Giftcard giveaway are

Carol at http://ceeceeblogger.blogspot.com/

and

LisaLisa at http://nighthelper.blogspot.com/

Come back tomorrow for Give Me Your Best Shot! I took a ton of pictures in Florida, and can't wait to share! And I am SURE each of you has at least one picture from Christmas that you could link up.

A Good Friend

We are on our way home today, but in the mean time my good friend, Safire, has a guest post for you. Safire is as good a friend as she describes below. :) She will be the first person I call when I get back home.

And, can I just say....I'll be very happy when I can sleep in my own bed again?

What words would you describe a good friend? Trust, loyalty, support, fun, comfort. These are just a few of the words I would use to describe a good friend, and all of them I use to describe Lolli. Lolli and I met because we go to the same church. I don't remember the exact moment we were introduced, but I do remember the first time we talked and I wanted to get to know her better. We were sitting in the couches in the foyer. I was pregnant with my first baby, she was pregnant with her last. She and I compaired due dates and realized that we were due only a few days apart. I was new to the area and had very few friends. I thought she would be a great person to get to know, if only because our kids would be similar in age.

After our babies were born, we spent a lot of time in the nursing mother's lounge during church. (Remember, our church is 3 hours long.) She was gracious and answered my questions and let me gush about my beautiful little Butterfly-girl. She mentioned she liked to scrap book. So did I! We soon set up a weekly scrapbooking "date" and talked more and more.

Butterfly and AJ have grown up having to play together their entire lives. This year they are even doing school together. She baby sits my twins and takes awesome pictures of our family. She always inspires me to be a better Mom. I can always count on her to go on an adventure with me, or know where the good adventures are! I am so glad that our babies are only 8 days apart so that we were able to become such good friends.

I'll leave you all with an anonymous poem about friends.

Simple vs. Real Friend

Anyone can stand by you when you are right.
But a friend will stand by you even when you are wrong.

A simple friend identifies himself when he calls.
A real friend doesn’t have to.

A simple friend opens a conversation with a full news bulletin on his/her life
A real friend says, “What’s new with you?”

A simple friend thinks the problems you whine about are recent
A real friend says, You’ve been whining about this for years. !?&$*#!! Do smth about it!

A simple friend has never seen you cry
A real friend has shoulders soggy from your tears

A simple friend doesn’t know your parents’ names
A real friend has their phone numbers in her address book

A simple friend brings a bottle of wine to your party
A real friend comes early to help and stays late to help you clean

A simple friend hates it when you call after he has gone to bed
A real friend asks you why you took so long to call

A simple friend wonders about your romantic history
A real friend could blackmail you with it

A simple friend when visiting acts like a guest
A real friend opens your fridge and helps herself

A simple friend thinks the friendship is over when you have an argument
A real friend knows that it’s not a friendship until after you’ve had a fight

A simple friend expects you to always be there for them
A real friend expects to always be there for you!

I hope you all have a good friend like Lolli in your life!

Meet the Photographers Behind Bloggography

I love that blogging has introduced me to so many incredible people that I never would have had the chance to get to know otherwise. Manic Mother is one of those people. I recently had the opportunity to ask Manic Mother a few questions in preparation for our upcoming Bloggography series. Here's what I found out:

--Tell me a little about yourself for my readers:

I am a stay at home mom to two boys, Ezra is 2.5 , and Rowan is 5, I also have an amazingly supportive husband. I have been blogging a little over a year; Lolli’s blog was one of the first I started reading that inspired me to become a better photographer and blogger.

My son Ezra was diagnosed with Leukemia in May of 2009, and shortly after that my husband was laid off. I brainstormed ways to generate extra income for our family, and that is when I decided to turn my hobby into a business. In September of 2009, I opened Manic Mother Photography. I absolutely adore what I do, and can only hope my business will continue to grow!

--Tell me about your journey to becoming a photographer. Did you always have an interest in taking pictures, or was this a more recent hobby you picked up?

Besides, my high school photography class, I wouldn’t say I always had an interest in photography. I have always been a really manic creative person though, and seem to dabble a little in many art forms, so photography was bound to happen sooner or later.
I didn’t start taking pictures with a DSLR until about a year ago, so I am still always learning and teaching myself new things. I never tire of attaining new photography knowledge.

--What is your biggest challenge when you are taking pictures?

I am with Lolli on this one, light is always the biggest challenge, finding it, how to use it, etc.
Second to that would be knowing what buttons to use to get the look and exposure I want.

--What is your favorite subject to shoot?

Babies. Hands down. No matter what they do, they look adorable. So you can’t really go wrong. And if they can’t yet crawl its and added bonus, since you don’t have to chase after them.
I really enjoy photographing kids of all ages, but babies are my favorite.

--What has been the tool that has helped you progress the most?

Books. Lots of them. I bought as many used books as I could afford on Amazon, and immersed myself in them. And read them, and then reread them.

Also Flickr has been a new favorite source of knowledge. I love getting on there and looking at all the different groups for inspiration, and seeing how people have processed their photos. I love editing pictures as much, if not more than taking them!

And of course lots, and lots, of practice.

**Speaking of Flickr, please go join the Bloggography group! Upload 8 of your favorite pictures (max per day). Amateurs and pros are welcome!

Flickr is a great way for all of us to share our work in one place, ask for critique and help. And of course shower each other in comment love!

And now that you've learned all about Manic Mother, go visit her blog to read my interview!

Christmas Photo Outtakes

Capturing a decent family picture is a tricky business. It's hard enough when you're working with a photographer. But add the additional element of tripod and timer and it's an adventure, to say the least. I was looking through last year's Christmas-season pictures in preparation for I Heart Faces' Hilarious Outtakes theme this week. I found this series of photos from the night we decorated our Christmas tree last year. I had the brilliant idea to take a family picture in front of the tree. I set the camera up on a tripod and got this photo on my first try:

Family Christmas picture 5

I should have quit right there, but I thought we'd be able to get something better if we tried a few more times. It only got worse the more photos we tried.

Family Christmas picture 4

Things got a little goofy, so we tried to tone things down and be a little more serious. Didn't work.

Family Christmas picture 3

Two fake smiles and some closed eyes. Darn! Let's try again!

Family Christmas picture 2

I give up. That first picture is looking better and better.

Family Christmas picture

Guess what?! I was asked to be one of the guest fan judges this week, so I will be making my way through all of the links (or as many as I can!). I am currently accepting bribes in the form of money and chocolate. Just kidding! I can't wait to see everyone's hilarious outtakes. Pictures really are worth a thousand words, don't you think?

Chocolate Crinkles From the Trenches of Motherhood!

It's Christmas week, and my family and I are enjoying some warmer weather and time with family in sunny Florida. My friend, Mandy, from The Trenches of Motherhood shared a cookie recipe recently that made my mouth water instantly. She graciously agreed to share it with all of you, too! Enjoy (and as Mandy said, try not to gain too much weight by looking too hard at the pictures!)

(note: I have tried to fix the formatting, but ended up finally having to delete most of the pictures from the post. If you'd like to see step by step photos instructions, click on the title below.)

Chocolate Crinkles

Gather the following ingredients:

  • 4 Cups Sugar

  • 1 Cup Oil

  • 4 tsp Vanilla Extract

  • 8 oz Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bars

  • 8 Eggs (Preferably not frozen!)

  • 5 & 1/2 Cups Flour

  • 4 tsp Baking Powder

  • 1 tsp Salt

  • 2 Cups Confectioner Sugar

  • 2 Bags of Candy Cane Kisses

Place all 8 baking bars into a small sauce pan and melt on low to medium heat.

In a mixing bowl add the sugar, oil, vanilla, and the melted baking chocolate.  Mix together well.

Add the 8 eggs and mix.  Then add the salt and baking powder and mix again.

Add and mix in the flour until dough is smooth and creamy.  Then pour into a bowl, cover, and refrigerate until the dough is stiff.

A few hours later, pull the dough out and let it soften.  Meanwhile, unwrap the two bags of Candy Cane Kisses and put them in a bowl.  Pour some of the 2 cups confectioner sugar in a separate bowl, too. Pre heat the oven to 350 degrees.

Scoop out small balls of dough – I use the smallest Pampered Chef Cookie Scoop – and roll into balls.  Then roll them in the bowl of confectioner sugar until well covered.

Place them on a baking sheet or baking stone and bake for 10 – 12 minutes.  When the begin to “crack” and look only slightly gooey they are done.  Pull them out and top each one with a candy kiss.  Let them set for 4 minutes before removing from pan.

And…Mmmm, Mmmm, Good!  You now can enjoy your own batch of Trench Mommy’s favorite Christmas cookies!

Merry Christmas from Florida!

I hope each of you are having a wonderfully peaceful and joyous Christmas today. I am enjoying the day with my family in sunny Florida.  Except for the fact that rain is on the forecast for today. We'll enjoy it anyway. We already are.

Merry Christmas!

Did You Know?

As a child, Christmas Eve meant a busy day of cooking, a 30-minute drive to Grandma and Grandpa's house, and en evening of food, cousins, carols, and a very entertaining white elephant gift exchange. Christmas Eve was the best day of the year. Much more exciting than Christmas Day.

I knew things would change once I got married, but I didn't know how much they'd change. Thirteen years ago today, I was in the hospital, holding my newborn daughter, my first child. That day, and every Christmas Eve since, I have thought about Mary and what that first Christmas must have been like for her.

On this day that we prepare to celebrate the birth of our Savior, I commemorate the beginning of a new life for me. Not only is Christmas Eve the birthday of my oldest daughter, but it is the birthday of my life as a mother. (And, no, I was not a teenager myself here. I just had a very young face)

I have often pondered on the great responsibilities and the incredible privilege of being a mother. What an honor it is to raise God's children and to participate in the miracle of His creation.

So much has changed since that day in 1996 when I held my newborn baby in my arms. That day, I was filled with love. I couldn't comprehend the love that I felt for that little girl. But I was also overwhelmed by the responsibility placed in my hands that day. How was I going to do this? What did I know about being a mother? Again, my thoughts turned to Mary and what she must have been thinking that day. She had been visited by an angel and knew from the beginning of her pregnancy that her child was no ordinary child. But how could she have understood in those early days? Even with the angelic preparation, how could she--a young girl with no experience being a mother or even a wife--prepare for the feeling of holding her son for the first time?

One of the kids' favorite Christmas sons is Mary, Did You Know? (by Mark Lowry) My kids apparently really like it. Here are the words:
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.

The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb.

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the Great I Am.

I don't think Mary could have fully comprehended what was in store for her son or how his life would effect all mankind. Do we, over 2000 years later, fully appreciate what his life means to us? I can't know what was going through Mary's mind that night, but I know her heart must have been very full. Her son had come to earth to be our Savior, but he was her baby first.

Have a wonderful and Merry Christmas!

Three Ways to Enjoy Christmas in the Midst of Change

Kristina from 3 Under 4 is visiting Better in Bulk today while we finish our drive to Florida. Soon I will be relaxing on Florida's beaches. It may not be the summer, but even 74° will feel like paradise compared to the snow that we left back home in Maryland. Kristina is a fellow Blog Frogger and mother of several small children (who are pretty dang cute - see below). Please welcome Kristina!

This Christmas has been one characterized by adjustments.  My parents’ divorce went through this year and my mom also got remarried.  My brother is once again deployed in Afghanistan and my husband is working both Christmas Eve and Christmas day.

I don’t bring any of this up to invoke pity or to make you feel badly.  In all reality, I am excited about this Christmas and I wanted to share some holiday tips regarding how I am enjoying the holiday in the midst of the crazy changes in my life.

Find the Happiness

I am a firm believer in the fact that there is a good thing in every situation.  Maybe I am a bit too positive, but truly, all of these changes have brought something good to my life.  I am thankful for my family and since my mom got remarried, three step-siblings (even though they are grown) have been added to my family.  My brother may be in Afghanistan, but he and I are much closer now that he is in the Marine Corps than we were when he was a civilian.  Yes, my husband will work on Christmas, but that will give us a chance to not only celebrate a small Christmas with his family, but also one with our nuclear family!  There is so much to be thankful for this season!  Healthy children, healthy spouses, a job, family that is both here and far away, a country, a place to live!  I would be remiss to not be grateful for those things.

Pick a Tradition

When I got married, my husband and I brought two families, both rich in tradition together and we have been trying to meld them ever since!  Recently, I have found that I am beginning to enjoy his family’s traditions and yet I still miss some that I practiced growing up.  Unfortunately, due to extenuating circumstances, some of these traditions no longer continue.  However, one thing I found that truly helps me enjoy Christmas is to pick one tradition to practice with my kids and focus on that.  This year I am making “Bedtime Bags” as seen in Amanda Blake Soule’s book The Creative Family. Each child will also get a special pair of pajamas to open and wear on Christmas Eve.

Focus on the Memories

Yes, making cookies with children is messier and takes longer than if I were to do it myself, but what kinds of memory does that make?  Hmmm?  None, other than whether or not I burned the cookies.  I struggle with this last tip because I want to go, go, go and nothing makes me happier than crossing items off my “to-do” list, but on December 26, what will I remember of Christmas?  Will I remember rushing around like a crazy woman and scolding my kids while they watched TV or will I have memories of baking or decorating or caroling?

So, this Christmas I challenge you to find the happiness in your life and focus on that.  Pick one tradition to pass on to your children this year and then look forward to doing it again next year. Focus on making memories even if it takes a little longer. Lastly, have a very Merry Christmas!

First Snow

Today we are packing up the van and heading down to Florida for a week. Through the week, I have scheduled several guest bloggers who were gracious enough to help me out during my family vacation. Allow me to introduce you to my first guest:

Toni Anderson is founder of The Happy Housewife, a website dedicated to helping families live well on less. Toni is an author, homeschooling mother of seven children, and a military spouse. She has been inspiring and educating readers on frugality, budgeting and how to thrive on one income in a two-income world since 2008.

The First Snow

I was born and raised in Florida. I remember it snowing once, when I was four years old. We lived in an apartment complex and it seemed like the whole world was outside enjoying the flurries.

Many years later I am raising my children a little farther north. I remember the first snow I experienced with my children. It was the Blizzard of '96 (at least that is what I called it). We had one little girl who didn't even own a pair of snow boots. We wrapped her tennis shoes in ziploc bags and took her out to play. She lasted about 5 minutes before deciding she had enough.

Thirteen years later I have become a little more experienced with snow, and I am happy to say that almost all of my seven children own a pair of snow boots. My children wait with excited anticipation of the first snowfall, while I wait for one of my favorite family traditions.

snow

In our house snow = hot chocolate. After I bundle my children and send them out to play, I place a kettle on the stove. Depending on how organized and prepared I am for the year, I either get out the hot chocolate packets or get the ingredients out for my Starbucks hot chocolate recipe. Mini marshmallows are a must, whipped cream and chocolate syrup a bonus.

After the children play for a while, they come in tired, wet and cold. I help them remove their "snow clothes" and they sit down at the kitchen table with their mug of hot chocolate. This has become one of our favorite traditions.

I love cooking for the holidays. I have all of my traditional dishes that I have to cook every year (or it wouldn't be the holidays!). My meal includes ham, a family-favorite potato dish, jello, rolls, beans, salad, and pies. Feeding my own family of 7 is pricey enough, but adding friends and family for the holidays can get pricier for sure.

The current economy impacts overall holiday plans for the majority of moms, emphasizing the importance of deals like these when it comes to ensuring that Americans everywhere have the opportunity to enjoy holiday meals with their families. And with many of us planning to entertain more than 7 people for the holidays, Walmart’s fresh and affordable holiday meals help eliminate some of the stress that comes from hosting a large get-together. And to give your recipes a new spin, Aarón Sánchez of Food Network fame shares cooking tips and unique, delicious recipes he created with Walmart’s basket of holiday and New Year’s ingredients.

Best of 2009

2009 brought a lot of change to my blog. Not only did I switch my blog's name from Life is Sweet to Better in Bulk, but at the end of the year, I moved my blog from Blogger to Wordpress. I developed strong friendships with fellow bloggers, made a trip to New York with one of them, and traveled to Las Vegas to meet a few others. Then I won a trip to BlogHer 2010 to hang out with even more great bloggers.

Mead Johnson, Maker of Enfamil, Loses Multi-Million Dollar False Advertising Case Against Store-Brands

This is a sponsored guest post written by a Press Release on behalf of PBM Products. Post powered by Sponzai.

GORDONSVILLE, VA., December 2 , 2009PBM Products, LLC, a leading infant formula company that supplies store-brand infant formulas to Walmart, Sam's Club, Target, Kroger, Walgreens, and other retailers, has received a favorable jury verdict and a $13.5 million damages award in its false advertising lawsuit against Mead Johnson & Co., the operating subsidiary of Mead Johnson Nutrition Company (NYSE: MJN) (“Mead Johnson”), the makers of the national-brand Enfamil® LIPIL® Infant Formula. Mead Johnson is 83 percent-owned by Bristol-Myers Squibb.

PBM’s lawsuit claimed that Mead Johnson engaged in false and misleading campaigns against PBM’s competing store-brand of infant formulas, suggesting they do not provide the same nutrition as Mead Johnson’s brands. PBM’s store-brand infant formulas cost up to 50 percent less than Enfamil® LIPIL®. The $13.5 million in damages awarded by the jury in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia is one of the largest damages awards ever for a false advertising case.

“This decision by a jury of the people confirms that Mead Johnson’s ads have been false in suggesting that there is a nutritional difference between our store-brand formula products and their products, when in fact the only major difference is price,” said PBM CEO Paul B. Manning. “Despite Mead Johnson’s scare tactics, parents are assured that PBM’s formula products are as high quality and nutritious as Mead Johnson’s.”

U.S. District Court Judge James R. Spencer issued his written rulings yesterday following the November 10th jury verdict. Judge Spencer’s written rulings permanently enjoined Mead Johnson from making any false statements concerning PBM's infant formula, including the claims Mead Johnson previously made in Enfamil advertising that "It may be tempting to try a less expensive store brand, but only Enfamil LIPIL is clinically proven to improve brain and eye development," and "there are plenty of other ways to save on baby expenses without cutting back on nutrition."  The Court also ordered Mead Johnson to retrieve from the public domain all advertising or promotional materials containing these or any other false claims about PBM's store brand infant formula.

The details of the decision and the complaint are posted online in full at:

The nutritional supplements under examination in the case are two fats, DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and ARA (arachidonic acid), which Mead Johnson calls “LIPIL®” solely for marketing purposes and touts as promoting infant brain and eye development. PBM’s claim focused on Mead Johnson’s direct mailing to more than 1.6 million parents of an alarming blurry picture of a child’s cartoon duck next to a clear picture of the same image which suggested that anything other than the Enfamil LIPIL® blend of ingredients is inferior and will result in poor eye and brain development. Other parts of the false advertising campaign consist of statements that only Enfamil LIPIL has been proven to confer visual and mental benefits on infants, and store-brand formulas are a “cut-back in nutrition” compared to Enfamil.

PBM successfully argued that these advertisements were false and misleading especially since PBM store- brand infant formulas have the same nutrients at the same levels as Enfamil. PBM infant formulas are formulated to contain DHA and ARA, and are sourced from the same supplier in amounts which equal or exceed the DHA and ARA in Mead Johnson’s Enfamil LIPIL®.

This decision marks the third time PBM Products has sued Mead Johnson for false advertising claims. On the prior occasions Mead Johnson admitted that it made false claims about PBM’s products. It is also the first false advertising case to focus on the issue of DHA and ARA nutritional ingredients in formula, which were introduced into the market in 2003 and have become a staple in recent years by many brands as key components for infant development.

“This jury verdict should send a significant and clear message to Mead Johnson about the way it conducts marketing and advertising for its brands,” said Manning. “This lawsuit also demonstrates our complete commitment to defending our products and the valuable brands of our retail partners.”

“As a parent and supporter of children’s medical research, I take a personal responsibility in assuring our customers that the products we produce are healthy and nutritionally equivalent to brand names like Enfamil® LIPIL®. It is important, especially now, for parents to know that there are lower priced yet highly nutritious store-brand formulas that will provide the same benefit to their children as any national brand name formula product,” Manning added.

The U.S. infant formula market is estimated at $3.4 billion and the global market is estimated at $7.9 billion.

All of PBM’s formulas, and for that matter all of U.S. infant formulas, are subject to the exacting standards of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), pursuant to the Infant Formula Act of 1980. This legislation vested FDA with the authority to ensure that all infant formula products sold in the United States provide the necessary levels of identified nutrients required for the growth of healthy babies. For more information, visit this FDA link.

PBM Products was represented by the law firm Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP. Partners from the firm’s advertising practice, Harold P. Weinberger and Jonathan M. Wagner in New York, led the team.

When I was anticipating my oldest daughter coming of babysitting age, I had dreams of spur-of-the-moment dates with CandyMan on weekday nights. It would be SO easy, and so cheap! No babysitter to schedule, pick up, drop off, and PAY. It would be heaven! We could go on two dates a week, go out to eat just for the fun of it. We planned with two of our friends who also have a teen. We could meet up on a Thursday to grab an ice cream after the kids went to bed.

A year into the reality of it, and we are not going out any more frequently than we used to. Now, I do use KitKat's babysitting services often (too often, according to her). Next week, she becomes eligible to babysit for other families, and I'll have to start competing for her time. Or scheduling again. Ugh. There are meetings, shopping trips, things I need to do without 5 kids tagging along. I have loved having a built-in babysitter.

And yet, I rarely get out to eat or go do something fun with CandyMan. For me, it's all about time. It's all about the fact that we started a business 16 months ago and have cut back on "fun." And the fact that my husband works non stop, 7 days a week. Puts a damper on our social life. The juice box jungle widget on my sidebar has been teasing and taunting me this last week as it has flashed reminders of restaurant.com's great deals on eating out. Have you tried restaurant.com? I have, and was completely impressed! They regularly email me with fantastic offers. For my birthday, 3 of us we ate out at a really nice place for a grand total of $16. Incredible. If only I could convince my husband to take advantage of them more often.

Restaurant.com

According to a survey from Juice Box Jungle, 71% of moms say they don't get out enough. What about you? Do you get out as much as you'd like? When you get out, what do you do? Eat at a restaurant with your spouse, get together with another couple for a double date, or hang out with friends? What would YOU do with unlimited, free babysitting like I have?

Join the discussion in my forum about eating out!

Disclosure: This is a sponsored post from Juice Box Jungle and Restaurant.com. I really, really love them, I really do. They didn't tell me what to write. It was all the truth. All me.

I Want to Eat Her Up (Give Me Your Best Shot!)

It wasn't hard to pick my favorite shot of the week. A friend of mine came over with her 3 kids....some of the cutest kids on the planet who don't have the same last name as me, as a matter of fact. Who can resist hair this color...and the CURLS? This particular shot caught my eye:

Little Red Head Thinker

And, although that was my favorite shot, that picture would not be complete without an example of how the majority of the photo shoot went. Take this for example:

Laughing Kids

Their mom brought a special treat from home. Check out Flarp.

I have GOT to get some Flarp for my camera bag. Never again would I fear not getting kids to smile. It's pure brilliance, I tell you!

What have you been photographing this week? Have you tried anything new? Read to find out more about Give Me Your Best Shot....And come back to leave the link to your best shot below (please link to your actual Give Me Your Best Shot post). Happy {Insert Holiday Here}

The older my kids get, the busier the holiday season becomes. That's 5 kids who are involved in boy and girl scouts, choirs, youth activities at church, plays at school and orchestra. And each of those activities seem to schedule some kind of Winter presentation.

This morning, I headed to the elementary school to hear 6 year old Reese and her best friend sing a Christmas song that they wrote during indoor recess a week or so ago. The school was so impressed by their song that they asked the girls to perform at the school's Winter sing along, but neither of the girls will be there, so they opted to have them sing for the school's morning announcements. I was waiting out in the hall to congratulate them when they left the office. Could they be any cuter?

This evening, we attended Necco's 5th grade chorus concert, where not only did she sing, but acted as one of the introductory narrators. In Russian. So proud. Her concert tonight was well organized and so much fun, but it honestly left me chuckling. When I was in 5th grade, we sang Jingle Bells and some generic Santa songs, and then always added "Dreidel Dreidel Dreidel" to be "fair." Tonight, no joke, they sang songs for Christmas, Hanukkah, Chinese New year, Kwanzaa, and Las Posadas. Am I forgetting any? It was lovely, really.

And, as a treat, Reese was asked to be Mary for a fun little live Nativity with some of the kids from church. Apparently, being Mary gets you out of singing along....

And The Panic Sets In

Visitors Center International Creche Display

I love Christmas.

I love the candies and the cookies.

I love watching the excitement on my children's faces as the exciting day approaches.

I love the music, the lights, the magical atmosphere that is EVERYwhere.

I love the smell of pine and freshly baked Christmas goodies.

I love it, I really do.

But shopping for 5 children and various family members, mailing 200 Christmas cards, the cooking and baking, the mess that a wonderfully-smelling tree leaves every day, and now, this year, the preparations for a week-long car trip out of state. It's all good.

But I have less than a week left.

Where did the time go?

When am I going to fit everything in?!

This is the time for the Christmas time panic to set in.

How do you fight it?

PS--since a few of you asked....no, that is not my house. I can't even imagine. No, that's a Christmas creche display at the Washington DC LDS temple visitors Center, where we made a visit yesterday. :)

Holiday Shopping - Holiday Shipping

I am a plan-ahead kind of holiday shopper. I make detailed lists and check things off as I purchase them. I know exactly what I'm getting for everyone, and except for those hard-to-find items, holiday shopping is rather fun for me. For the last eight years or so, I've been making each member of my family a customized calendar with pictures of each family member, plus all of the birthdays and anniversaries through the year. I have been doing it for so long that I have the system down pat. Except for the finding-time-to-do-it part.

When it comes to holiday SHIPPING, I am less on-the-ball. I tend to leave my shipping til the last minute. I want to get everything ready before I make the ONE trip out to mail them. What is the quickest way to get my packages where they need to go? And more importantly, what is the cheapest route? Really, for me, it's all about time and money.

FedEx packing services

When I ship packages there are a few things you can count on: I will reuse a box that has been shipped to me (if I ever move, I will have quite the supply of folded up boxes ready and waiting) and I will stock up on packages that need to be mailed before making a trip out to FedEx, UPS, or the post office.

I was asked to be on a FedEx blog tour this holiday season. Not only does FedEx Ground cost 10% less than UPS Ground, but the new FedEx Office Print & Ship Centers offer customized calendars, cards, and stationery in addition to packing tips and assistance. I love the fact that I can stop in at FedEx and accomplish more than one thing while I'm there. Again, the time factor. Better yet, I could use FedEx Express and arrange a same-day pickup of outbound shipments to anywhere within the US or worldwide. I can handle not having to leave the house to mail my packages.

FedEx Office

Now here's the exciting part: In conjunction with this tour, anyone who signs up for a free account on fedex.com and records their name and confirmation number *here* will be entered to win one of 5 Apple iPod Touches! This opportunity is open to everyone!

Need a Last Minute Holiday Gift? Try Yoursphere!

Those of you who, like me, have older children know what a challenge it is to find them worthwhile and affordable gifts for birthdays and holidays. KitKat's 13th birthday is next week, the day before Christmas, so I have to prepare doubly for her. On her list this year? A cell phone, an iTouch, a digital camera with video......I'm sure it doesn't surprise any of you that I cannot afford to get her all of those high-end gifts at once.

Luckily, I had the opportunity to review a social networking site for kids these last few weeks, and I am happy to say I found a winner: Yoursphere.com! KitKat and Necco (age 10 1/2) LOVE Yoursphere, and are begging me to let them get on to chat online with each other (silly, I know--but they love it!), meet new friends their age, and play games every day. I honestly feel so much better about Yoursphere than I do about having my kids on Facebook.....I'm just not quite ready for that.

yoursphere

www.Yoursphere.com is the social network for kids and teens that puts safety first and provides a positive and age appropriate alternative to Facebook, Myspace, and other sites created by adults for adults. Yoursphere was founded by a mom of 5 (I like her already!) who was concerned about her children's safety on the internet. Yoursphere is a social network for kids and teens, which unlike other sites offers:

• Identity verification, predator check, and requires verifiable parental consent
• Limits participation to kids and teens through age 18. (Kids can be members until they turn 19.)
• All content is created by kids and teens for kids and teens. No worries about adult content.
• There are no ads on Yoursphere. The membership fee -- a dime a day – is used to support Yoursphere’s safety measures and to provide activities, prizes, and rewards for each and every member.
• Offers scholarships and supports youth-selected philanthropies: 3% of each membership fee is pooled into a scholarship program.

**************

Would you like to try Yoursphere out for your kids? Or do you have a pre-teen that you need to find a quick gift for? Yoursphere memberships are a quick and cost-effective gift for kids! Plus, I am offering $0.50 off the monthly membership and $5.00 off the annual membership, using the code: YS17-JBFR. Bonus!

**And for one lucky reader, I have a full year's membership to give away this week! All you have to do is leave me a comment below to enter.**

For extra entries, you can help me build my "new" blog back up by subscribing to my feed, tweeting about this giveaway, or adding me to your blog roll (or changing your old 1momof5.blogspot link to my new betterinbulk.net url).

This giveaway will end on Sunday, December 20, 2009 at midnight EST, and winner will be notified and emailed their unique code on Monday, December 21 (I want to make sure I get things all finished up before I leave town next week!) and just in time for Christmas!

Disclosure: I was given a Yoursphere.com 1-year membership for two of my children as part of this review.

It's Pets Week again on i heart faces!

Little dog-I Heart Faces Pets

I don't have a pet, so pictures of pets can be hard to come by. Doesn't it figure, though, that in a week we will be at my in laws' house, which is filled with cute animals?

I'll stock pile the pet pictures for later.

The Best Day

This is a little longer than the typical quote I post for Sunday Citar, but I was driving in my van yesterday and stopped to listen to the words to this Taylor Swift song for the first time and found myself crying as I drove down the interstate.

The Best Day
(click on song title to hear the song on Amazon)

I'm five years old, it's getting cold, I've got my big coat on

I hear your laugh and look up smiling at you, I run and run

Past the pumpkin patch and the tractor rides, look now, the sky is gold

I hug your legs and fall asleep on the way home

I don't know why all the trees change in the fall

But I know you're not scared of anything at all

Don't know if Snow White's house is near or far away

But I know I had the best day with you today

I'm thirteen now and don't know how my friends could be so mean

I come home crying and you hold me tight and grab the keys

And we drive and drive until we found a town far enough away

And we talk and window shop 'til I've forgotten all their names

I don't know who I'm gonna talk to now at school

But I know I'm laughing on the car ride home with you

Don't know how long it's gonna take to feel okay

But I know I had the best day with you today

I have an excellent father, his strength is making me stronger

God smiles on my little brother, inside and out, he's better than I am

I grew up in a pretty house and I had space to run

And I had the best days with you

There is a video I found from back when I was three

You set up a paint set in the kitchen and you're talking to me

It's the age of princesses and pirate ships and the seven dwarfs

And Daddy's smart and you're the prettiest lady in the whole wide world

And now I know why the all the trees change in the fall

I know you were on my side even when I was wrong

And I love you for giving me your eyes

For staying back and watching me shine

And I didn't know if you knew, so I'm takin' this chance to say

That I had the best day with you today.

Love you, Mom.
